The High Peaks, although surrounded by industrial centres, is as wild and rugged as anywhere in Britain. Local villages of stone merge with the peat moorlands of the Dark Peak, and the hills of limestone in the White Peak offer enchanting caverns, an elegant contrast to the gracious spa town of Buxton 1000 ft up in the Peak District, and the splendour of Chatsworth House.

Bakewell, the home of the Bakewell Tart is a handsome market town with good shopping situated on the River Wye, with a medieval bridge and Bath House fed by the springs. The stately home of Chatsworth is close by and is well worth a visit with its richly furnished rooms, secluded walks and the Emperor Fountain and Cascade; a staircase of flowing water.

Another stately home to visit is Haddon Hall, the home of the Duke of Rutland, and is situated in the delightful countryside of the Peak District and is one of the finest Tudor houses in England. Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath and Alton Towers, will prove a great success with the children and the young at heart, as will the Heights of Abraham cable cars and the caves at Castleton.

Further afield, enjoy shopping at Sheffield's Meadow Hall, whilst at the southern tip of the Peak District is the market town of Ashbourne with a tall-spired church and old houses.
